Majestic Stone
Every year, Liz’s Loft, a gallery in Los Angeles, hosts “Diverted Destruction” where artists make work with items Liz saved from the dumpster. The salvaged items in the 2015 show were fabric samples from several merchants near Liz’s Loft.
Pairing “Majestic Stone” salvaged fabric swatches with Cameron’s photographs of Incan stonework is the basis of this series. Each work embraces reuse and celebrates cultural continuity. Incan stonework is seen throughout the Peruvian Highlands and much is still in use today – often in foundations and walls of newer buildings. She enjoys that “majestic” describes both the contemporary fabric swatches and the Incan stonework - and that repurposing is integral to both. In addition to the fabric swatches, her “leftovers” from previous projects are woven into each piece, adding additional layers of materials and meaning.
